Cleft Sentences — It-Clefts & What-Clefts

C1 — grammar, writing, speaking

Kenji: Everyone's blaming me for the delay.

Sofía: It was Ben who missed the deadline, not you.

Kenji: Really? What I heard was completely different.

Sofía: What you heard was wrong. It's time someone corrected the story.

Common mistake: “Ben was who lost the phone.” — Correct: “It was Ben who lost the phone.”

Cleft sentences split one idea into two clauses to put a single piece of information in the spotlight — 'it was X who...' or 'what I need is...' — instead of just stating it plainly.

Kenji: Then it's Ben who should explain, not me.

Sofía: Exactly. It's about time someone corrected the story.

Reading

By the time the story reached the whole office, it was Kenji everyone blamed for the missed deadline — not Ben, who had actually forgotten to send the final files. What bothered Sofía most wasn't the mistake itself, but how quickly the wrong version spread. It was she who finally sat everyone down and corrected it. 'It's Ben who needs to send an apology email,' she said, 'not Kenji, who did nothing wrong.' What surprised her afterward was how relieved Kenji looked — he'd been carrying the blame silently for two full days.
