Going to — Plans, Decisions & Predictions

A2 — grammar, vocabulary, listening, reading, writing

Sofía: I have plans! I'm going to redesign my studio this weekend.

Ben: We're going on a date on Saturday... I mean, I'm going to ask her first.

Kenji: Look at those clouds. It's going to rain on your date, Ben.

Abuela Carmen: And Ben is going to forget his umbrella. That's not a prediction — that's experience.

Common mistake: “I going to study tonight.” — Correct: “I'm going to study tonight.”

We use 'going to' for plans and decisions already made, and for predictions when you can see the evidence — dark clouds, a losing team.

Reading

Sofía loves plans. Every Sunday night, she writes her list for the week. This week is special: 'On Monday, I'm going to present my new design to a client from Bogotá. On Wednesday, Kenji and I are going to visit a photography exhibition. On Friday, I'm not going to work late — I'm going to have dinner with Abuela Carmen. And on Saturday... Ben and his date are going to need help, so we're all going to wait near the park. Just in case.' At the bottom of the list, there is one more line: 'Prediction: Ben is going to be fine. Probably.'
