Relative Clauses — Non-Defining & Advanced Structures

B2 — grammar, reading, writing, speaking

Kenji: Sofía, who is the woman who designed that mural downtown?

Sofía: That's my friend Valentina, whose studio is two blocks from mine.

Kenji: And the building where she works — is that the one with the yellow door?

Sofía: Yes! The place where all the artists meet on Fridays.

Common mistake: “My sister, that lives in Bogotá, is a doctor.” — Correct: “My sister, who lives in Bogotá, is a doctor.”

Medellín, which used to be one of the most dangerous cities in the world, is now known as a hub for design and innovation. Sofía, who has lived here her whole life, says the neighborhood where she grew up changed completely in twenty years. The comuna where she was born, which many tourists visit today for its outdoor escalators, was once a place few people wanted to enter. 'The people who transformed this city,' she says, 'are the same people whose grandparents lived through the hardest years. That's a story worth telling.'
